Are polyurethane materials toxic?
Polyurethane (PU) is an important synthetic material with a wide range of properties. Its products range is wide and versatile. Therefore, the question of whether polyurethane materials are toxic has attracted more and more attention.
In fact, qualified polyurethane solid materials are non-toxic, but polyurethane raw material is toxic. Polyurethane has two major raw materials, isocyanate (including TDI, MDI, PIDI, HDI, etc.) and polyether polyol, of which isocyanate is relatively toxic, especially TDI is recognized as toxic, carcinogenic and irritating. Other excipients: catalysts, surfactants and blowing agents are non-toxic and harmless.
In recent years, the formulation and process technology of replacing TDI with MDI has received increasing attention and made great progress. The range of applications of MDI is constantly expanding, even in the field of soft foam in the unified TDI. In addition to the process and performance aspects, the environmental aspects are a strong driving force. MDI is known to be much less volatile and relatively less toxic than TDI.
When purchasing and using such products, we must pay attention to the stability of products, choose to produce in strict accordance with national standards, and strictly manage, inspect and test related products.
